Want to Adopt a Kitten?

I’m one of many cat foster parents that looks after cats and kittens for Salem Friends of Felines until they can be adopted. In an effort to showcase some I’m looking after, I’ve put together the following “movie trailer” that shows them in action. After the movie trailer, I’ve posted a description of each. If you’re interested in one of these kittens, please contact Salem Friends of Felines at (503) 362-5611.

Kenai: Beneath this cute fluffball’s exterior is a feisty kitten ready to instigate playful attacks on her siblings.  Physical description: Grey, medium hair.

Dedos: This little boy is the most adventurous of the four.  He likes to explore, but also likes to curl up on warm laps. Physical description: Short hair, black and white tuxedo.

Kink: We aren’t sure what unfortunate circumstance befell this poor little guy that resulted in a broken tail.  But it doesn’t appear to bother him as he plays happily with his siblings. Physical description: Short hair, gray tabby with white paws and chest, broken tail.

Katmai: Katmai suffered from a hernia that resulted in her having surgery at the young age of eight weeks. Physical description: Short hair, gray tabby.

Angelina: This mama cat has done a good job taking care of her babies, and now she just wants some fun.  She likes chasing laser lights and other toys.  Physical description: Short hair, gray tabby.

Mural Controversy at Oregon School for the Deaf

(Salem News) The Oregon School for the Deaf in Salem, Oregon, is set to bask in the spotlight on October 31 when the makeover of its school airs on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. But that’s not the only attention being brought to the school. Right now a controversy is brewing over a mural that was painted at the school by the school’s former art teacher (of 20 years), John Roy Wilson.  I could explain it all here, but I think the following KATU newscast does a better job…

Extreme Makeover Countdown – 2 Days

(Extreme Makeover) In two days the Oregon School for the Deaf edition of Extreme Makeover Home Edition airs! For today’s countdown post, I’m providing you with some photos I took on 9/11 at the site. Salem firefighters were preparing for a 9/11 ceremony at the Extreme Makeover site and I got a couple of nice pictures during the process. Twice on 9/11 the audience, cast, crew, and volunteers observed moments of silence in honor of those that died on September 11, 2001 at the New York World Trade Center buildings. Here are three photos I took…

Extreme Makeover Countdown – 3 Days

(Extreme Makeover) It’s three days until the airing of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition featuring the Oregon School for the Deaf. For today’s countdown post, we have a rather strange video to show you. It’s a video featuring some of the cast of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. It’s not a public clip, meaning that the clip is unlisted on YouTube and is more of a “just for fun” thing the staff do for each other.

In this video there are three different staff Halloween stories. The one I want to direct your attention to is the third one featuring Johnny. It takes place inside the Nightmare Factory at the Oregon School for the Deaf. He starts by showing how the photo system works. Those of you who have gone through the Nightmare Factory know that you can buy photos at the end. Basically, when you walk around a corner, a picture in a frame drops and a skeleton lurches out at you with a scream. Right when you react is when the photo is taken that you can buy at the end of the experience for $7. Enjoy this video as we get closer to Sunday…

Clip from Extreme Makeover Oregon School for the Deaf

(SalemOregonBlog.com) We have a treat for you today. It is a clip from the upcoming episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition for the Oregon School for the Deaf. This is a clip that volunteers working on site won’t recognize because it is from the deaf students trip to Minnesota. It’s great to see this because it reminds you what you were working for and what good can be done when people (like Extreme Makeover) present the opportunity. The Extreme Makeover Marlee Matlin, who shouldn’t need an introduction. But as a reminder, you’ve seen this deaf actress on shows like Law & Order, The West Wing, My Name is Earl, and even Spin City (in an episode called “Deaf Becomes Her”). More recently she had a recurring role on “The L Word”. She’s also been in Hollywood movies like Children of a Lesser God. Marlee Matlin is living proof that anyone can overcome obstacles to achieve their heart’s desire…

First Nightmare Factory Extreme Makeover Promo Hits ABC

(SalemOregonBlog.com) The first promo for the Nightmare Factory on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition is here and we’re proud to be able to feature it for you. For many this will be the first look at some of the props in the Nightmare Factory. And for those who have experienced it, you’ll get a quick glimpse at some scenes with the lights on. The promo features horror-king Rob Zombie who helped out with the Nightmare Factory redesign. The episode, featuring the Oregon School for the Deaf Nightmare Factory makeover and new dorm will air this Sunday at 8pm on ABC…

New Dates Added for Nightmare Factory!

For awhile now I’ve been recommending that the Oregon School for the Deaf extend their dates for the Nightmare Factory in order to capitalize on the publicity received from the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show. I’m pleased to report that they have done just that. The Nightmare Factory will now be open the weekend following Halloween, allowing people who learn about the Nightmare Factory on TV to experience it in person. Previously, the Nightmare Factory was scheduled to close the same day of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airing – October 31. By opening up one more weekend, they’ll be able to cater to hundreds/thousands of new people wanting to experience the Nightmare Factory for themselves. It will also allow the school to raise an additional five figures in money. The money benefits the Oregon School for the Deaf and projects they are working on.

Nightmare Factory New Dates and Times:

November 5 & 6 – 7pm-11pm

Extreme Makeover Countdown – 4 Days

(Extreme Makeover) Four days. That’s it. Less than two months ago Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover team was here in Salem, Oregon to oversee a makeover of the Oregon School for the Deaf. Now in four days that episode will air on national TV, giving more than 12 million people exposure to not only the Oregon School for the Deaf, but also the city of Salem, Oregon. While they were in town, Ty Pennington and the Extreme Makeover crew filmed in several spots throughout Salem, including the State Capitol. Now anticipation is building as we inch closer to the air date.

And speaking of anticipation. Today’s countdown post features a video from the Statesman Journal that gets reactions from various people as they waited on reveal day for the bus of Oregon School for the Deaf students to arrive. Enjoy…

Extreme Makeover Countdown – 5 Days

(SalemOregonBlog.com) It’s now only five short days until the airing of the makeover of the Oregon School for the Deaf on the popular TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. On October 31 at 8pm the Oregon School for the Deaf will enter the national spotlight. But also entering the national spotlight will be the school’s haunted house, called the Nightmare Factory. The Nightmare Factory, open to the public every October, is used to raise tens of thousands of dollars to help keep the school open and help accomplish school projects. The makeover of the Nightmare Factory is one of the best things to happen to the school as the publicity on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will drive up numbers of those that go to the experience every year. That, in turn, increases the profit for the Oregon School for the Deaf.

For today’s post we are going to show you a video clip of one of the teams that helped paint the Nightmare Factory, SubM2…

Extreme Makeover Countdown – 6 Days

It’s only six days until the Oregon School for the Deaf is launched into the national spotlight via ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition TV show. There was a lot of excitement in Salem when, in early September, the Extreme Makeover bus pulled in with a plane flying overhead carrying a banner that read “Good Morning Oregon School for the Deaf”. Oddly enough, that same iconic bus was completely absent from the reveal. That’s something you don’t see on the show -- a missing Extreme Makeover bus.

For today’s countdown post we’re going to revisit one of the news broadcasts of the Extreme Makeover team arriving in Salem, Oregon. This is a KATU news report about the makeover event…
